On keeping two sketchbooks

I have threatened to return to this topic and so, inevitably, here we are.

I want to keep one, perfectly chronological, clearly linear, sketchbook. I really do. But I just can't. Here's why:

If I'm to even think about sketching when I'm out with the kids I need to bring a sketchbook I'm not precious about. The other day Miss P decided my drawing of the vase on our cafe table needed a touch up - blue pencil for the water. And so she took it upon herself to make the amendment.

And that's ok. In fact, it's fine. Because this sketchbook is a true chronicle of everyday, messy life. It's for quick sketches I do on reflex, jotting notes to remember things, and a place to collaborate with the kids - whether I like it or not ;)

But I also know that in time, I will look back at these pages of mummy/kid collaborations and they will be the most treasured pages of all.

Also, because of the pedant in me, I need to keep another 'nice' sketchbook. One I take on outings for the specific intention of sketching. One where I can take time to labour over the drawings, enjoy the process, not be in a rush. This sketchbook has nicer paper in it and will, of course, take a lot longer to complete.

But finally, I'm happy with this two-sketchbook system. For now ;)
