Last night was the Nillumbik Prize Exhibition opening at Montsalvat. I took my Mum along and we had such a wonderful night. I was absolutely floored by the diversity and quality of the work on show and I feel extremely honoured to be hung in such company.
The winner of the Prize was an incredible work by Macgregor Knox, Sequoia Seat. It's a huge carving of a Sequoia tree which he sourced after it had been struck by lightening (how they actually got it into the gallery I have no idea!). In his artist's statement he describes his seat carving as a reflection on the history of the tree as well as an emotional response to that log he found. It is a beautiful, inviting work, and as someone who thinks about trees a lot, I am very drawn to it.
It is a wonderful feeling to be in this exhibition of amazing work. If you're in Melbourne, the show is on in the Barn Gallery at Montsalvat, Eltham until 25 August 2013 (free entry to gallery). You can even vote in a People's Choice Award ;)
